Healthy Living ...

Healthy living is something we all aspire to in a world where everything is achievable. However, with life being full of distinct pressures, we are constantly bombarded with scare-mongering stories, whether it’s the size zero phenomenon or the obesity epidemic.

In reality, healthy living and reaching a healthy weight are determined by different factors for each and every person.

We all know that good health is linked to a good diet and there is endless advice available about the best foods and weight-loss systems around, but sometimes it is hard to know what to do for the best outcome in our own, personal situation. By the same token, we also know that keeping fit is necessary to help boost our energy levels, as well as our metabolism, but how much and what kinds of exercise is enough to get the job done?

As we get older, managing our weight properly and getting the right balance of food types will improve our overall feeling of well-being, whilst also reducing the risk of developing illness and disease. But what exactly does a 'healthy diet' look like, and is it really achievable in this rushed, massed produced, instant gratification world that we live in today?

Ever heard of the food pyramid? You know the one we were taught at school with lots of 'healthy' grains and cereals at the bottom, and fruit and veggies a respectable somewhere-in-the-middle standard?

A little outdated for your taste perhaps?
We're going to explore these (and other pyramids) and more myths along the way and together we will find hopefully some golden midway we can all safely tread AND perhaps lose some weight while we're at it!

The best six doctors anywhere
and no one can deny it
are sunshine, water, rest, and air
exercise and diet.

These six will gladly you attend
if only you are willing

Your mind they'll ease
Your will they'll mend

and charge you not a shilling.

~ Nursery rhyme quoted by Wayne Fields, What the River Knows, 1990
